I AM A BODEIST
I've gotten in at least 4 heated debates (one for each event he has missed the medal stand) in the past week about the Bode Miller philosophy to Olympic competition. I praise him as a quasi, new age prophet, who speaks the truth, lives the truth, and just enjoys life. Sure, he hasn't won medals yet, and you criticize him for it. But that just proves him right...
Bode on drinking...
He parties hard almost every night and does not refrain from partying late into the night before raceday. People criticize him for it (even though he has won more races and accomplished more than any American skier that you can name). People ask why he does it. The real reason: he loves to party. But he can't say that. So he gets drunk and comes up with other great ideas. 1) When he skies drunk/hungover, his body is not taking the time to think things through. It just acts on instinct. Thrust into a high-stress situation, his brain doesn't freak out. He just reacts. This helps when you're skiing. Sometimes, you don't have times to think everything out. 2) When he is drunk/hungover, he lets some of his inhibitions down. We all do this. It's the only way Chris Schrimpf will ever dance or meet girls. We've all been there. So Bode will take more risks. Some people risk driving home drunk. Bad idea. Bode risks skiing up to 60 mph down a steep hill. So far, it's paid off for him. By no means do I encourage kids to do this, and this is why Bode tries to keep to himself. I am just saying that he makes sense and he's having fun. Maybe that's because I'm drunk.
Bode on youth in America...
Bode does not want to spread the message that competing in athletics while drunk or hungover is good a thing. He will defend himself but does not want to promote this type of behavior. That said, Bode suggests that the real problem with America is the over-emphasis on winning, or coming in first place. Too many kids will quit sports or exercise because they are not the best or cannot compete on the highest levels. Therefore, they go home, sit on the couch, play video games, and get fat. We can all think of people who have done this. Yet the media (and those that debate me) insist that this is just a cop-out in case he doesn't win a medal. Well, he isn't winning medals. He is disappointed, because he didn't do his best. But if he did do his best, and still lost, he wouldn't care. I really believe that. Yet you care, and you criticize him for it, because you are too obsessed with winning.
I know someone will comment, "The only ones that don't care about winning are the losers." Good for you. Let's go have a beer.

I was never told as a child to get first place. I think few children are. I think for the most part, kids are told to "do the best you can". Bode's best is being the best in the world. Bode is extremely gifted. Bode wastes that gift. Bode's job is to ski. He drinks on the job. He is a bad role model. Bode said Lance Armstrong takes steroids. Lance Armstrong is tested randomly more than 40 times a year. He is the most tested athlete in the world. Bode is wrong. Bode is noticeably out of shape at the Olympics. He was being tauted as having the potential to be the greatest american winter olympian of all time. now, he is the most disappointing american olympian of all time. american people like people who work hard and do well. not people who have the resources but waste them.
Bode's so slow down the mountain because he knows chuck norris is waiting at the bottom to kick his ass for being a fuck up.
i think there is a word for bode's sad status... ahh yes: "alcoholic"
bode's like bono but without the moral indignation
i love greg patcella and making out with him
slacking on the job, where is today's post?
Slacking on the job? I think its called "pulling a Bode."
Why did Bode Miller DQ in the slalom? Ted Ligety needed someone to hold his skis.
Why did Bode DQ? You would, too, if the gates all looked like saloon doors from the night before.
Bode Miller fell three more times today. Not on the slopes. He was just drunk.
Much-hyped U.S. skier Bode Miller is still without a medal after he was disqualified for straddling a gate in Tuesday's combined event to end his day early. On the bright side, that meant Miller could still make happy hour.
This sounds like the same "give all kids in little league a trophy" bullshit. The same terrible ideas that lead to people debating the A,B,C,D,F grading system in schools. Why should my child be made to feel inferior by receiving a C or a D? There's a good chance its because he/she is stupid or is lazy. Can't we all just get A's? No! Because in the real world, those that work hard and have tangible accomplishments are those that succeed. Was Michael Jordan so remembered for his penchant for going out and having fun? Or was he remembered for all of his great accomplishments? Bode needs to put up or shut up. Unless gold medals are awarded at the games for the longest keg stand, he was otherwise a waste of a roster spot.
